Every relocation forum has the same thread: “Can I handle Panama’s heat?” It’s a fair question, and most of the answers you’ll find are useless — either “you’ll get used to it” or “you’ll melt.” Neither is true, and neither is specific. So here’s the honest version, from two people who have spent sixteen years figuring out how to live in places that are, by the numbers, considerably worse than Panama City.

Panama City’s Heat, by the Numbers

Panama City sits about 9 degrees north of the equator, which means it doesn’t really have a summer — it has a dry season (roughly January through April) and a wet season (May through December). Daytime highs stay in a narrow band year-round, generally 88–92°F, but the humidity swings hard: 90–100% in the wet season, noticeably lower — though still muggy — in the dry season. That combination is what makes the heat feel heavier than the thermometer suggests.

Here’s the part people considering Panama usually skip: how that actually compares to places Americans already consider normal to live in — including the two places we lived that get genuinely, dangerously hot.

Look at the actual numbers and Panama City isn’t the extreme case — Phoenix and Palm Springs are, by a wide margin. Panama’s ceiling sits around 90°F. Phoenix logged 70 separate days above 110°F in 2024 alone (its historical average was about 21 days a year; since 2021 that average has climbed to roughly 42), and Palm Springs set an all-time record of 124°F that same July. St. Petersburg’s July heat index — what your body actually experiences, not just the thermometer reading — lands close to what Panama throws at you on a typical day.

And here’s the part that runs against conventional wisdom, so we want to be direct about it rather than repeat the usual line: dry heat is not automatically the “easier” heat. For us, it’s the opposite. At 108–115°F, even a breeze in Phoenix or Palm Springs feels like standing in front of a convection oven — there’s no evaporative cooling to speak of when the air itself is bone-dry and radiating heat back at you, and there’s no real relief once the sun goes down either. We consistently find St. Petersburg’s humid high-80s more tolerable than a Phoenix or Palm Springs summer day, and we’re not the only ones who think so — most of the friends who visit us from Phoenix tell us they’d rather have St. Pete’s humidity than go home to their own summer.

On Panama City days with bright sun and no cloud cover, our actual behavior was simple: stay inside, or take an Uber or the Metro to go shop, eat, or get a drink. We did not grit our teeth and walk it out. That’s not a failure of adaptation — it’s the same call we’ve made for sixteen years everywhere else we’ve lived.

What Sixteen Years of Desert and Gulf Heat Taught Us

Here’s the context that gets lost when people ask “can you handle Panama”: we’ve lived across the full spectrum, not just hot places. Seven years in Palm Springs. Years in Phoenix summers that, as the numbers above show, regularly cross into genuinely dangerous territory. Hot, humid St. Petersburg, Florida. But we’ve also lived somewhere genuinely mild — the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Marbella in Spain, New Jersey — so this isn’t a case of only ever knowing extremes. We know exactly what it feels like to not think about the weather at all, and Panama isn’t that. But it’s also nowhere close to Phoenix in August, and that distinction is the one that actually matters for deciding whether you can live somewhere.

In every hot place we’ve lived, we followed the same routine: go outside in the early morning or around sundown, and structure the rest of the day around staying out of the peak heat. The honest admission: we hardly ever walked in Phoenix, Palm Springs, or St. Petersburg. We drove, or later, we used rideshare. Panama City doesn’t change that pattern — it just swaps a car for an Uber or the Metro, which, if anything, is a better system than what we had in the U.S.

Sixteen years of managing genuinely brutal heat, plus real time in genuinely mild places, means we’re not guessing about Panama. We know exactly what we’re comparing it to.

Panama’s Quiet Advantage: The Early Sunset

This is the detail almost nobody mentions, and it matters more than it sounds like it should. Because Panama sits so close to the equator, sunset barely moves all year — roughly 6:20 to 6:40 pm, swinging by about twenty minutes total between the longest and shortest days. Compare that to St. Petersburg, where July sunset is closer to 8:30 pm, or Phoenix, where summer evenings stay blazing until nearly 7:40 pm.

In practice, that means Panama City’s “cool down and go outside” window opens earlier and more reliably, every single day of the year, with no daylight-saving-style drift to plan around. If your evening walk, dinner reservation, or bar crawl starts at 6:30, you’re not fighting the sun for it the way you would in Florida or Arizona in the summer.

Building a House That Fights the Humidity

Our approach to the heat isn’t just behavioral — it’s structural, and it’s driving real decisions in our home search. The plan: buy a house, then make sure it has energy-efficient windows (no jalousie windows — we’ve written a separate piece on why jalousie windows are a dealbreaker for us), efficient mini-split air conditioning, and as much general energy efficiency as we can reasonably build or retrofit in.

Jalousie Windows Are a Hard Pass

Those louvered glass-slat windows are everywhere in older Panama construction, and they’re a bad match for a humid climate: they leak air constantly, which means your mini-split is fighting an uphill battle to cool and dehumidify the room. We’re treating “no jalousie windows” as a non-negotiable line item in our house search, not a nice-to-have.

The reasoning isn’t just about comfort — it’s about the electric bill and the mold risk, and those two things are connected. A mini-split doesn’t just cool a room; it pulls moisture out of the air as it runs. A leaky, inefficient house makes the unit work harder to do both jobs, which drives up the power bill and often still leaves the room borderline damp.

The Mold Threshold Isn’t a Guess

Indoor relative humidity above roughly 50–60% is where mold risk starts climbing, and Panama’s ambient humidity sits well above that most of the year. Keeping the inside of the house below that line — through sealed windows, a properly sized mini-split, and dry-mode use when it’s damp but not hot — isn’t a comfort preference. It’s what keeps a house free of the musty smell and mold problems that expat forums in Panama bring up constantly.

Dry Mode and a $15 Hygrometer

Most mini-splits have a “dry mode” (usually a water-drop icon) that slows the fan and prioritizes pulling moisture out of the air over dropping the temperature — useful on damp, overcast days that aren’t hot enough to justify full cooling. Pair it with a cheap plug-in hygrometer in the main living areas so you’re managing humidity by an actual number, not by how the air feels, which is an unreliable gauge once you’ve been in the tropics a while.

Under $5 to skip a fifteen-minute walk in 90% humidity is not a hard call for us. It wasn’t in Phoenix with a car, and it isn’t in Panama City with an app. The Metro adds a second option for longer, predictable routes, and between the two, “walk it in the sun” almost never has to be the answer.

So, Can You Handle It?

Here’s the honest answer, not the brochure one: Panama’s heat and humidity are real and constant, and if you’ve spent your whole life somewhere genuinely mild, they will be an adjustment. But “can you handle Panama” is the wrong question if you’re comparing it to an imaginary mild climate instead of the one you’re actually leaving. If you already live somewhere with a real summer — the Gulf Coast, the desert Southwest, the Southeast — you likely already have the coping mechanisms: move your outdoor time to the morning or evening, use AC and rideshare without guilt, and don’t treat a hot afternoon as a personal failure. And if your current summer involves triple-digit dry heat, there’s a real chance Panama’s humid 90°F feels like a step down, not up — that’s been true for us.

What we’d flag honestly: if you run hot the way Brian does, or if you have a health condition that makes heat or humidity genuinely risky, don’t take our word for it — spend real time in Panama City in the wet season before you commit, and talk to a doctor about your specific tolerance.
